Canaan, New Hampshire · Open 24/7
A campfire that never goes out.
Bartertowne is a year-round freedom campground in the woods of Canaan, NH — a place to pitch a tent, share a fire, and gather with other people who take personal liberty and voluntary association seriously.
What this place is
Camping, community, and consent — under the open sky.
We gather under the principles of the Shire Society: each person owns their own life, no one initiates force against another, and every binding obligation is voluntary. Out here that's not a slogan — it's how the camp runs. Show up peaceful, pitch in, and you belong.
Always open
No gates, no season, no closing time. Come for a night around the fire or stay and build something.
Free people
A home for voluntaryists, free staters, and anyone pursuing maximum personal liberty and social freedom.
In the woods
Quiet forest land in Grafton County, minutes from Canaan Street Lake and the Northern Rail Trail.

What people find here
"I came up for one night and stayed the weekend. Nobody asked for ID, nobody told me what to do — just good people, a warm fire, and real conversation."
— A first-time visitor
"This is what voluntary community actually looks like. You bring what you can, you take what you need, and it all just works."

Common questions
Do I need to reserve a spot?
Not for Phase 1 — Bartertowne is open and primitive. Message us before a first visit and we'll point you to a good site and send directions to the gate. Online booking is coming soon.
What does it cost?
Value moves by voluntary exchange: cryptocurrency first, cash always welcome, and barter of labor or skills at the heart of camp. Reach out and we'll work out something fair.
Is there power, water, and cell service?
This is off-grid, primitive camping. Plan to be self-reliant: bring water or a filter, your own power, and don't count on hookups. See the amenities & packing list.
Who is this for?
Peaceful people who value personal liberty and voluntary association — voluntaryists, free staters, and anyone curious about the Shire Society ideas. Show up peaceful and you belong.
Can I bring my family / my dog?
Yes. Many gatherings are all-ages, and well-behaved dogs are welcome. Use good judgment around the fire and other campers, and clean up after yourself and your animals.
Come sit by the fire.
The ring is lit and there's room for one more. Plan your first visit, ask a question, or just tell us you're thinking about coming up.
